Attach files from Google Drive and Dropbox
Attach Google Drive and Dropbox files to a task, document, channel message, or comment as a reference, without uploading. The file stays in that service and doesn't use your storage.
Many of your team's files already live somewhere: a document in Google Drive, a client delivery folder in Dropbox. Until now, attaching them to a task meant downloading and uploading them again, which took time and created a second copy that quickly went stale. Now you can reference the file directly.
A reference, not a copy. The file stays in your Google Drive or Dropbox; Taskie only keeps its address and details. That's why it doesn't use any of your workspace's storage, and anyone who opens the file always sees the latest version.
Connect your account
- Go to the App Center.
- Choose Google Drive or Dropbox and click Connect.
- In the window that opens, allow Taskie access.
- Choose whether the connection is Personal (just for you) or Shared with the workspace (usable by every member).
Attach a file
Wherever there's an attach button, choose the cloud file option. The file browser opens inside Taskie:
- Browse folders: explore your folder tree just as it appears in the original service.
- Search: if you don't know where the file is, search for its name.
- Select: click a file to attach it. Its name, type, and icon appear on the task or document.
This option is available in four places: tasks, document pages, channel messages, and comments.
Member access to files
Important: Access to the file is still controlled by Google Drive or Dropbox, not by Taskie. If your coworker doesn't have access to that file, clicking the attachment shows the original service's no-access message. To fix it, give them access in that service or put the file in a shared folder.
When a file changes or is deleted
- Content changes: because the attachment is a reference, the latest version always opens. There's no need to update the attachment.
- Moving or renaming: Taskie checks attachments periodically and keeps their details up to date.
- Deletion in the original service: the attachment is marked Unavailable. Taskie can't restore a file that was deleted in another service.
Frequently asked questions
- Do these attachments count against my storage? No. That's the main advantage of this approach.
- Can I move the file into Taskie later? Yes. Download the file from the original service and upload it like any other file to keep a copy in Taskie.
- What happens to the attachments if the connection is lost? The attachments stay, but they won't open until you reconnect.
- Does any external code or script run on the page? No. The file browser is built by Taskie itself, with full support for right-to-left languages.
