Restrict who can post in a channel
For each project channel, choose who can start new posts: everyone, admins only, or a specific list of people. Other members can read the channel and reply in threads.
Some channels aren't meant for conversation: an official announcements channel, a management notices channel, a release channel. Until now, anyone who could see a channel could post in it. Now you can create a channel where only specific people post and everyone else just reads.
This feature is available on the Business Plus plan. In other workspaces, channels work exactly as before.
Three modes
- All: anyone with access to the channel can post. This is the default.
- Admins only: only project admins and the channel creator can start new posts.
- Selected people: a list you build yourself, plus project admins and the channel creator, who are always allowed.
Set it up
- Open the channel and go to its settings.
- Find the Who can post messages? section.
- Choose one of the three modes.
- If you chose Selected people, add the allowed members and save.
What exactly the restriction covers
- Restricted: creating a new post in the channel and forwarding a post to it.
- Not restricted: replying in an existing post's thread, adding reactions, turning a post into a task and creating reports.
This split is intentional: an announcements channel can still host questions and answers under each announcement without cluttering the channel's main stream.
A few use cases
- Management announcements channel: use Admins only. Every member reads the announcements, and if they have a question, they ask it in the thread under that announcement without cluttering the channel's main stream.
- Release channel: use Selected people with the release owners. The rest of the team just follows along.
- Daily report channel: use Selected people with the team leads. Members confirm they've read each post with a reaction.
- Open team chat channel: keep All. You don't need to change anything.
Who is always allowed
- Project admins
- The channel creator
- AI assistant replies and automatic posting of scheduled run results
Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from making a channel private? Privacy decides who can see the channel; this setting decides who can post in it. You can use both at the same time.
- What happens to earlier posts? They stay untouched. The restriction only applies from now on.
- What does a member who isn't allowed see? The message box is disabled for them, and the reason is shown.
- Can I open posting temporarily? Yes. Switch the mode back to All and restrict it again later. The change applies to everyone immediately.
- What happens if I remove someone from the selected people list? Their earlier posts stay in the channel; they just can't start new posts from then on.
- Does this apply to messenger bots too? Yes. A message sent to the channel through a bot follows the same rule.
- How can a project admin tell a channel is restricted? The channel settings show the selected mode and the list of allowed people.
