Task description history and comparison

Every time a task's description changes, the previous version is kept. You can view versions, compare two versions side by side, and restore any version.

A task's description is usually where the scope of work, acceptance criteria, and team notes live, and that's exactly why accidentally deleting or overwriting it causes real trouble. Now every change to the description keeps the previous version.

View versions

  1. Open the task.
  2. Above the description, click the history icon.
  3. A list of versions appears with the editor's name and the time of each change. The newest version is at the top.

Compare differences

When you select a version, its differences from the current text are shown: added text and removed text are highlighted in color, so you don't have to compare two texts line by line by eye. It's the same viewer used in document history.

Restore a version

To bring a version back, select it and click Restore. That version's text replaces the current description, and the restore itself is saved as a new version, so nothing is lost and you can go back again.

What is and isn't recorded

  • Every editing path is recorded: from the task page, the details window, mobile, or the AI assistant.
  • Back-to-back edits are merged: if one person edits several times in a row within two minutes, all of it is grouped into one version so the list doesn't fill up with useless rows.
  • Creating a task doesn't create a version: versioning starts with the first change after the task is created.
  • Description only: changes to the title, status, assignee, and similar fields are recorded in Activity, not here.

When it comes in handy

  • When the scope of work has changed: you can see exactly what changed and who changed it, and ask why.
  • When text was deleted by accident: instead of rewriting from memory, you restore the previous version.
  • When several people write at the same time: if someone's edit overwrote someone else's, both versions are in the history.
  • To track changes to acceptance criteria: in contract work, being able to prove what the scope was on a given date matters.

Retention by plan

  • Free plan: versions from the last seven days can be viewed and restored.
  • Paid plans: full history, with no time limit.

Versions aren't deleted when your plan changes. If you move to a more limited plan, older versions are only hidden. When you upgrade again, they all come back.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who can see the history? Anyone with access to the task itself.
  • Do images and attachments inside the description come back too? Yes. A version keeps the description text with the same formatting and inline images.
  • Is the same feature available for documents? Yes. It's explained in Document versions and restore.
  • Can I delete a version? No. History is read-only so it remains a reliable record.
  • Are changes made by the AI assistant recorded too? Yes, and they're marked with the assistant's name in the version list.
  • Does restoring return the task to its previous state? No. Only the description text is restored. The status, assignee, and dates stay as they are.
  • Does it work for subtasks too? Yes. Anything that has a description also has a history.
